How to keep landscape beds weed free!

The spring is the time to mulch. Most people know that. However, how often do you see these beds full of weeds by early summer?


Mulch can be great for weed prevention but only for a short period of time. The key to keeping weeds out of your beds for a long period of time is applying pre-emergent herbicide at the right time.


The best approach is to treat the beds with a post-emergent herbicide if weeds are present before mulching. Then, after mulching, applying a pre-emergent herbicide. The reason for this is because there are most likely dormant weed seeds in the existing bed and because there is often dormant weed seeds in the mulch itself. The pre-emergent will prevent these dormant seeds from germinating, at least for a while.
